Blue and Orange Beat. gouache on paper. 9x 13". |
Color is my subject in this painting. The brightest red behaves more like an orange here; the blue is "pulling" the orange out of the red. Cadmium reds are really quite orange to begin with. The light/dark grays and other neutrals add a liveliness to the palette. My goal here was to pack it in and make it feel like it could fly apart or fall apart.. Do you think the surface is active enough? I think I could have gone further.
This is a nice piece Jennifer. I like the play of warm and cool colors. There is a Matisse cutout feel to it. This would translate into a much larger work. Do you always work small?

I agree it would transfer well to a larger surface. But, the way I work makes it difficult, because the field of vision becomes so large. The freedom of a small movement becomes monumental as well.I find I start to fuss too much on each passage or shape on the larger scale. And I become Robert Motherwell without even trying. And I would have to do it in oil, not gouache. I suppose you're sorry you asked by now! LOL!

I forgot to add, despite all that, I'm working on a larger one at 19 x27".
